Did you ever wonder where the Vivery River received its name? It was not named after a famous restaurant (sorry, Christos and Nick), but after one of the early European settlers in the area, Marcellin Farand dit Vivarais. He dammed the river, and built a mill beside it in the 18th century.
If you would like to learn more about him, or the remnants of the mill still visible along the river, please join the Hudson Historical Society on Monday, January 11, at 7:30 PM. We are meeting at St. James Church Hall, with Maben Poirier and Pat McCaffrey presenting this interesting bit of our very local history to us.
There will also be books available, including the latest "Steam, Fire, and Ice" discussing Hudson industries, and the history of St-Thomas parish.
We look forward to seeing you there.

The Hudson Historical Society invites you to St. James Church Hall on Monday, November 9th, at 7:30 PM for a book review. After all, there is nothing more comforting on a fall evening than curling up by the fireplace with a good book. We promise you at least two! This is a special evening, as we discuss a brand new publication from the Hudson Historical Society, our first in French. This book, as edited by Maben W. Poirier, describes the history of the parish of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and its people. We are very proud of this publication, as it is our first in French. The second book that will be discussed will be another new topic for our meetings, a work of fiction. It will, however, be based upon historical fact, and will have a distinctly local flair. We will keep you guessing as to the title, but please come by and learn about some great fall reading. So please join us at St. James Church Hall on Monday, November 9, 2009, at 7:30 PM.

This Thanksgiving day, October 12 2009, please come and digest your meal to a special evening with the Hudson Historical Society. Lambert "Scot" Gardiner will be presenting "Hollywood in Hudson", a feature that he prepared for the Hudson Museum to showcase a collection of films that were made here in the Hudson area. His collection goes from the sublime (Joshua Then and Now) to the ridiculous (have you seen "I'm Not There"?).
This presentation will be entertaining, and hopefully interactive, as may of us will surely recall meeting famous people in and around town. This collections was put together by Scotty, but was based upon the support of many locals, including our resident superstar, Roy Elliott.
So please join us at St. James Church Hall on Monday, October 12 2009, at 7:30 PM.
